The war started because a certain group of people wanted to keep the slaves. Other people, known as abolitionists, wanted to free them. So that's what happened, ultimately anyways. Until the abolitionists won of course. But I'm not here to talk about politics, am I? No, I'm here to tell you why alcohol played such a big role in the Civil War. Alcohol had a large role in American history before 1861 and it continued to influence American culture even after the war ended. ## A Brief History of Alcohol in America ## Before I get into why alcohol played such an important part in the Civil War it's important that you understand that alcohol has always played an important role in American history. Or at least that's what mainstream historians tell us. While it may not be a widely known fact, American history is almost without a doubt one of the most complicated histories in the world. There has been many wars and there have been many battles to drive from the United States from those who wanted to take power for their own reasons. Here are a few things you can do to make yourself more knowledgeable on American history before 1861: 1) Learn about how Native Americans helped shape America's early history – read up on pre-colonization Native American tribes to gain a better perspective about what was going on years before European settlers came. Even before Columbus "discovered" the New World there were hundreds of thousands of people living here. 2) Learn about the American Revolution – also known as the Revolutionary War, this conflict began when America declared independence from Britain. While it's not widely known, many states are still planning to become their own country. Washington D.C., for example, is the capital of the US but it isn't part of its territory. 3) Learn about American history after 1861 – while this time period may be less relevant to your studies, there are many interesting things that you should read up on before you get started on your Civil War research paper. There's a ton of information to learn about and I can't even begin to list it all here. 4) If you have the time, learn about how America got its independence from Britain – although the Revolutionary War is said to be the war that drove America to become independent from Britain, there were many other conflicts that took place before then. In 1773, for example, British citizens headed back to their homeland after passage of a controversial law known as the Intolerable Acts which infuriated Americans. ## Why Alcohol Was So Important Before 1861 In order to understand why alcohol was such an important part of American history before 1861 you must first understand what their lifestyle was like during this time period. cfa1e77820
